The river that named a city
In 1823, four castaways were blown out to sea from Sydney. The survivors washed ashore at Moreton Bay, the first Europeans to see the river the Turrbal people knew as Maiwar. That December, after happening upon the remaining castaways, surveyor John Oxley charted it and named it the Brisbane. Two hundred years on, we distil a few steps from its banks on Edward Street. No other spirit brand is more firmly rooted in Brisbane.
